LANGUAGE IN ACADEMIC WRITING

Students are marked on the academic tone of their writing (even if this is not on the criteria sheet, it influences teacher ratings). This is why we need to explicitly demonstrate what academic writing looks like in terms of cohesive devices, word choice, sentence structure, etc. For this purpose, a few simple principles are better than a ton of recommendations. This is what the PowerPoint "Linguistic Aspects of Academic Writing" seeks to deliver. Feel free to adapt it to your class' level and needs! Also, it comes with several brief exercises, including the attached "Summary Phrases" exercise.
